SYDNEY, Australia - It was a mixed bag for stocks on Wednesday in Asia.
Australian and Japanese markets made appreciable gains, while in China stocks were slippery. Bu the star of the day was Hong Kong.
Overnight on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrials were up 73.92 points or 0.28% at 26,909.43.
The Standard and Poor's 500 edged up 0.96 of a point or 0.03% to 2,979.39.
The Nasdaq Composite fell 3.28 points or 0.04% to 8,084.16.
In Japan on Wednesday, the Nikkei 225 rose 205.66 points or 0.96% to 21,597.76.
The Shanghai Composite dropped 12.39 points or 0.41% to 3,008.81.
The Australian All Ordinaries strengthened by 24.20 points or 0.36% to 6,752.20.
It was in Hong Kong though where stocks shined. The Hang Seng jumped 475.38 points or 1.78% to 27,159.06.
The U.S. dollar was mixed. It lost ground to the British pound which rose to 1.2367 by the Sydney close on Wednesday.
The euro eased a fraction to 1.1038. The Japanese yen weakened to 107.67. The Swiss franc was easier at 0.9928.
The Canadian dollar was little changed at 1.3151. The Australian dollar edged higher to 0.6870. The New Zealand dollar rose to 0.6424.
